MUUS Marks Transgender Day
Mar 29, 2023
To the Editor:
Mattatuck Unitarian Universalist Society is a welcoming congregation that affirms and celebrates all lesbian, gay, queer, bisexual and trans people by addressing the needs of LGBTQ persons at every level of congregational life in multiple ways.
This includes acknowledging the presence of LGBTQ people and celebrating this diversity by having inclusive language and content in worship, throughout all programs, including religious education, and by engaging in outreach to the LGBTQ community.
Mattatuck Unitarian Universalist Society commemorates Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31, 2023, dedicated to celebrating transgender people and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide, as well as a celebration of their contributions to society.
This annual event was founded by transgender activist Rachel Crandall of Michigan in 2009. In contrast to Transgender Day of Remembrance in November that mourns those who were murdered and have been subjected to violence, this annual event seeks to acknowledge and celebrate living members of the transgender community.
Continuation of LGBTQ discrimination is evidenced in multiple ways including recent legislation aimed at denying LGBTQ people their rights from Missouri’s Don’t Say Gay Bill, to Tennessee’s ban on gender affirming care and a motion to censure Oklahoma Rep. Mauree Turner, a black, non-binary, Muslim legislator, an outspoken leader of LGBTQ+ rights.
Included among the multiple organizations fighting for LGBTQ rights are GLSEN, an American education organization, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance against Defamation).
The Social Justice Coordinating team at MUUS supports LGBTQ rights through financial contributions to LGBTQ organizations, displaying the pride flag at Sunday services and hosting guest speakers at Sunday services to educate our congregation and community.
